No matter what game you play that has a skill tree (called Traces in Honkai: Star Rail) system, you’ve almost definitely run into the problem of limited resources: you grind for hours to collect ascension materials, but you still don’t have enough to unlock every single node. How do you allocate what you have to get the biggest possible boost to your overall combat power? This guide breaks down the universal logic for Traces node priority, so you can unlock the most impactful effects first with the limited resources you have.
No matter what role your character fills on your team, you can’t go wrong following this simple priority order: core mechanics → key effects → generic small nodes. Below, we break down the priority logic for each step in detail:
Most skill tree systems include critical nodes that unlock unique character effects, and Honkai: Star Rail is no exception. This category includes damage boost passives, extra ability effects, and team-wide buff passives. These nodes are the foundation of what makes your character functional; without them, your character’s full kit isn’t even active. Even if these nodes only cost a small amount of resources, you always want to unlock them first. This is the highest return on investment you can get for your Traces materials.
Once you’ve unlocked all your core mechanic nodes, it’s time to prioritize maxing out nodes that directly impact your character’s core role on the team:
Damage dealing characters: Prioritize nodes that directly boost your main damage output, including buffs to your primary damage ability’s multiplier, crit damage, and elemental damage bonuses. If your main damage comes from your Ultimate, level all Ultimate-related nodes first. If you rely more on your combat skill for consistent damage, level those first. You can leave non-primary damage abilities for later, no need to rush them.
Support characters: Prioritize maxing out all team-wide buff effects first. Attack buffs, enemy resistance reduction, and increased healing output are all top priority. Self-defense stats can wait until later. As long as your support’s buffs are fully functional, they’re already contributing everything your team needs to succeed.
Tank and defense-focused characters: Prioritize maxing out nodes that boost HP, damage reduction, and aggro control first. Lock in your ability to reliably soak damage from enemies, then fill in any extra damage-related nodes later.
Only once you’ve finished the first two steps should you spend resources on the small nodes that only give minor increases to attack, HP, or defense. These nodes give extremely small power boosts, so they have a far lower return on investment than the two categories above when you’re working with limited resources. Just leave them for when you have extra materials leftover to spend.
Beyond these core rules, you can tweak your node order based on how far along you are in leveling your account and characters:
When you first unlock a new character and have barely any extra resources: You only need to unlock the core mechanics and 1 to 2 of the most critical damage or buff nodes. Don’t force yourself to unlock more right away. Unlocking core nodes for every character on your main team will give you a much bigger overall power boost than partially maxing out a single character.
Mid-game progression, when you have a steady supply of extra resources: Max out all your key effect nodes first, then slowly start filling in all the small generic nodes to gradually increase your character’s overall strength.
Late-game, when you’re working on fully finishing your character build: Finish off by unlocking every single remaining node to complete your character’s full Traces progression.
Most character build guides you’ll find online are full, maxed-out endgame setups. A lot of new players make the mistake of trying to follow the full order right away, which wastes tons of resources on unimportant small nodes early on. That leaves you with no resources left to unlock your core critical effects first. If you’re copying a guide, only unlock the core nodes the guide marks as high priority first, then fill in the rest later once you have enough resources.
Many new players get into the habit of starting at the entrance of the Traces tree and unlocking every node along the path as they go, maxing out all the small side nodes before they reach the core nodes. This often leaves them with no resources left to unlock the core nodes they need. You only need to unlock the path required to reach the core node; you don’t need to rush to max out the small nodes along the path. Just come back and fill them in later in the game.
At the end of the day, the core rule for Traces node allocation is simple: invest your limited resources first into the key effects that directly change how your character functions. Follow the order of core mechanics first, key effects second, small generic nodes last, and you’ll get the maximum possible power boost with the least amount of resources spent.
