Honkai: Star Rail is a beginner-friendly turn-based RPG, but resource management is one area where many new players slip up and make costly mistakes without even realizing it. Many resources in the game seem harmless or unnecessary early on, but using or upgrading them at the wrong time can drag your overall progress to a halt later on. Below, we’ve put together a complete list of pitfalls to avoid, so you can allocate your resources more strategically and skip unnecessary setbacks.
Stellar Jades are the most valuable resource in the game, earned primarily through top-ups, quests, and limited-time events. The biggest waste trap new players fall into is spending Stellar Jades recklessly on the standard banner or the wrong limited character banners. Standard banner characters and Light Cones will gradually join your collection through pulls and Undying Embers anyway, so spending Stellar Jades here gives extremely low value for your investment. When it comes to picking which limited banner to pull on, we recommend planning ahead to go after a core main DPS or key support for your team, instead of mindlessly chasing every new character that releases. You also shouldn’t spend Stellar Jades to refill your Trailblaze Power unless you absolutely need to push through main story progression and are okay with small microtransactions, since this investment has an extremely long payoff period that rarely pays off later in the game.
The most common waste new players make is “equal opportunity leveling” — spreading all the EXP materials and Credits you grind every day evenly across every character you own. The end result is every character ends up stuck in an awkward, under-leveled spot that leaves your damage output feeling extremely weak against tougher content. We recommend focusing all your early resources on leveling a core team of 1 main DPS plus 2 sub DPS/support characters first. Even a core team made up of 4-star characters is more than enough to get you through early content. Aim to get your core team to at least level 40-50 and unlock all their key Traces before spreading out resources to other characters. Over-investing in irrelevant characters only makes pushing through main story content far harder than it needs to be. This goes double for Credits: never spend Stellar Jades or Trailblaze Power specifically farming Credits. Credits only become truly scarce in the mid-to-late game, and early game dungeons drop more than enough to cover all your early progression needs.
4-star (purple) Light Cones are incredibly useful transition gear for new players. The biggest mistake here is overleveling purple Light Cones all the way to max level. 5-star (gold) Light Cones have far higher base stats and much stronger effects than 4-stars, so the value of leveling one 5-star Light Cone is almost always higher than maxing out multiple 4-stars. We recommend keeping purple Light Cones capped at level 30-40 at most, and only prioritizing leveling ones that are a perfect match for the character they’re on, instead of mindlessly pushing their level as high as possible. When it comes to Eidolons, outside of key Eidolons for your 5-star main DPS, new players should never spend extra pulling resources just to get more Eidolons for 4-star characters. This just spreads your pulling resources too thin, and makes it far harder to get the key 5-star character you need from the current limited banner.
Trailblaze Power recharges slowly, so the biggest waste of Power for new players is farming Relic caverns too early and too often. Before you hit Trailblaze Level 40, the Relics you get from farming are low quality and almost all get replaced quickly, so it’s not worth dumping tons of Power into chasing perfect stats. You should prioritize using your Power to level up characters, farm ascension materials, Traces materials, and Credits first. Once your core characters have all their core capabilities sorted out, you can start farming and building up your Relic collection. Another hidden waste is mindlessly converting Power to Credits, since the return on investment here is extremely low. It’s far better to wait until late game to farm Credit dungeons or grab Credits from specific events.
There are multiple in-game shops where you can exchange for valuable resources, and the two most commonly missed by new players are Undying Embers and Medals of the Nameless. Undying Embers you get from pulling on the standard banner, and can be exchanged in the in-game shop for 5-star Light Cones or character shards, so make sure you check back regularly for new exchange items. Medals of the Nameless are earned from running the Simulated Universe, and can be exchanged for 5-star Relics, making this one of the highest value ways to boost your combat power in the game. On top of that, you should always collect all free resources from daily missions, Trailblaze Level rewards, and limited events. These are consistent, free sources of resources that will drastically ease the pressure of pulling and leveling your team.
The core fun of Honkai: Star Rail comes from building your characters and testing out battle strategies, not rushing through the story as fast as possible. Avoiding the resource mistakes we listed above will make your overall gameplay experience far smoother. Remember: save your Stellar Jades for high-impact uses (limited character banners), focus all your early leveling resources on a core team, and prioritize investing your Trailblaze Power into your core characters’ base progression first. As long as you do a little basic planning ahead, you’ll be able to sail freely through the galaxy and enjoy this one-of-a-kind interstellar adventure.
