In Honkai: Star Rail, plenty of new players even day-one launch veterans don’t have a clear idea of just how much material goes into fully leveling a character. If you want to get your favorite character all the way to the max level 80, and max out every single one of their Traces, exactly how much material do you need to prepare ahead of time? How long will it take if you only rely on natural stamina regeneration? This guide breaks down all the numbers for you, so you can plan your character progression properly in advance.
This calculation covers the full scope of progression: leveling a character from level 1 all the way to 80, plus maxing out every single Trace — including your basic attack, all three active skills, and all extra passive abilities. The only minor difference between characters of different elements is their element-specific materials, so the overall total stamina required barely changes across different character types. The full breakdown of total requirements is below:
After adding up all the stamina required to farm every single material on the list, maxing out a level 80 character with all Traces fully leveled costs somewhere between 9,800 and 10,500 total stamina. We broke down the total required time based on different common play habits:
Natural stamina regeneration gives you a fixed 180 stamina per day, and when you add the extra stamina you get from completing daily missions, you end up with roughly 200 usable stamina per day to spend freely. Doing the math, that works out to between 50 and 55 days total, which is about one and a half months to fully max out a single character.
If you use low-level stamina refills every day, or collect extra stamina from your monthly card, you’ll end up with between 300 and 360 stamina per day. That cuts the total time down to just 28 to 35 days, meaning you can fully max out a character in around one month.
You don’t actually have to force yourself to max every single Trace on a single character right away. Smart, intentional planning can save you tons of time and stamina:
For your main damage dealer, we recommend prioritizing maxing their Ultimate ability and core passive talent first. You can leave your basic attack at level 8 and come back to max it later, which cuts your total material requirement by around 15%. For supports and sub-damage dealers, you only need to max out their key damage-boosting skills and Ultimate. Unimportant basic attacks and smaller skills can even be left at level 6, which cuts your total material and stamina cost by almost half. That lets you get a usable, battle-ready character ready in just over 20 days.
We also recommend new players focus all their resources on maxing out one main DPS first. Once you clear higher-difficulty content, you can slowly work on leveling up other characters. Don’t spread your resources thin across multiple characters at once, that will just leave you stuck on difficult content and short on needed materials.
Overall, maxing out a fully leveled, full Traces level 80 character is always a long-term collection project. You don’t need to feel overly anxious or rushed if you’re playing steadily. Just plan your resource priority order correctly, and you can easily build up your favorite characters without the grind feeling overwhelming.
