As Honkai: Star Rail continues to roll out new major updates, more and more powerful new characters have joined the playable roster. Bronya, the 5-star Harmony character long hailed as the “god of the standard banner” at launch, has recently faced plenty of skepticism from Trailblazers. Can this launch-day standard 5-star still hold onto her legendary status in the new meta? Today, we’re breaking down Bronya’s current standing in the game to see if she’s still the unbeatable, must-build character she once was.
As one of the original 5-star characters available on the permanent standard banner from day one, Bronya has been considered the top pick for the Harmony role since the game launched. Her core power comes from one-of-a-kind mechanics that still hold up incredibly well even today.
Bronya’s skill instantly pushes one ally to act earlier in the turn order, while also boosting that ally’s total damage. Her passive adds extra critical rate and critical damage, and her ultimate buffs the entire team’s attack while also cleansing debuffs off a teammate. Whether she’s pairing with a main DPS to chain massive back-to-back burst damage, or helping clear content with punishing debuff mechanics, Bronya performs flawlessly. She also doesn’t lock you into any specific team composition, fitting with almost every main DPS in the game, giving her one of the highest usability ratings in the entire game.
Unlike limited-time rate-up characters that require waiting months for a rerun if you miss them, Bronya is always available on the standard banner. It’s extremely common to pull her accidentally while pulling for other characters, and most players end up getting her to full constellation naturally over time. A full constellation Bronya even adds extra damage buffs for your team, making her overall investment value much higher than most limited characters. Back at launch, pulling Bronya meant you could build her as a core team member and use her through every stage of the game.
As more limited-time Harmony characters launched in later updates, from Ruan Mei who offers incredible universal break damage buffs, to Sparkle who boosts single-target burst and action forwarding, many players have started claiming that Bronya has been surpassed and is no longer useful. But this take isn’t entirely correct.
It’s true that when building around specific damage types and team compositions, newer limited Harmony characters can hit higher damage ceilings than Bronya. For example, when pairing with break-focused damage dealers, Ruan Mei’s buffs fit much better. When pairing with multi-hit DPS that needs extra critical damage, Sparkle’s buffs are more optimal. But that doesn’t mean Bronya has lost all her value. Her core strengths — flexible action forwarding, reliable debuff cleansing, and unmatched usability — are still features that most new characters can’t match.
Even after multiple major updates, Bronya still has plenty of irreplaceable use cases, and is far from obsolete.
If you’re a new player, or you haven’t pulled a limited Harmony character that you’re happy with yet, pulling Bronya is never a bad result. She pairs perfectly with early main DPS like Seele and Jing Yuan, as well as newer damage dealers like Dan Heng • Imbibitor Lunae and Yunli. She can help you easily clear tough endgame content like Pure Fiction and Apocalyptic Shadow, making her one of the best characters to prioritize building when you’re just starting out.
Many new team compositions released in later updates still rely heavily on Bronya’s flexible action forwarding mechanic. For scenarios where you need to adjust turn order, or let your main DPS pull off back-to-back burst damage, a high-speed full constellation Bronya can still match the overall damage output of newer limited Harmony characters. That’s not even mentioning how valuable her debuff cleansing mechanic is for a lot of tough endgame stages.
At the end of the day, Bronya might not be the mandatory first pick for every single team composition anymore, but claiming she’s obsolete and useless is completely wrong. She’s still the most reliable, long-lasting 5-star character on the standard banner, and she still performs incredibly well even in the latest updates. While the title of “eternal GOAT” might go to new characters these days, Bronya is still a permanently valuable gold-tier standard character that’s worth fully investing in if you pull her.
