Honkai Star Rail Glossary: What Do DOT, Toughness Shred, and Action Push Mean?

Honkai: Star Rail is an incredibly popular turn-based RPG that has drawn tons of new players into the game lately. Whether you’re reading team building guides or discussing boss fight strategies with veteran players, you’ve almost certainly run into common player jargon like DOT, toughness shred, and action push — terms that leave brand new players totally confused. This handy guide breaks down these three of the most frequently used terms, so you can understand exactly what other players are talking about in no time!

Common Honkai Star Rail Terminology Explained

What Does DOT Mean?

DOT is an abbreviation for the English phrase “Damage over Time.” Unlike the one-time direct damage a character deals with a single attack, DOT damage deals a fixed amount of damage to enemies every single turn. Different types of DOT can also stack on top of each other, and do not overwrite existing effects. In Honkai Star Rail, characters like Sampo, Kafka, and Hook all rely heavily on the DOT playstyle for their damage output. When facing high-defense, high-health enemies, DOT often delivers far better results than direct one-time damage.

What Does Toughness Shred Mean?

Toughness shred is the common player term for a core combat mechanic in Honkai Star Rail. Every enemy in the game has a dedicated toughness bar, along with clear labeling for their unique elemental weaknesses. When you attack an enemy using attacks that exploit their weakness, you quickly drain their toughness value. This process of draining an enemy’s toughness is what players call toughness shred.

Once an enemy’s toughness is drained all the way to zero, they enter a broken state. This not only interrupts their upcoming action and leaves them vulnerable to more damage, it also deals a significant amount of extra break damage. Because of this, quickly shredding toughness is one of the most important keys to high damage output in Honkai Star Rail combat.

What Does Action Push (Pushbar) Mean?

Honkai Star Rail uses a speed-based action bar system for turn order. Every unit, whether it’s one of your party members or an enemy, moves along the action bar based on their own speed stat, and the first unit to reach the end of the bar gets to act first. What players refer to as action push (or pushbar for short) is moving a unit’s action progress forward along the bar. Most of the time when players mention pushbar, they are talking about using support skills to push your own party members’ action progress forward, so your allies can get their action turn earlier.

For example, four-star support character Asta’s skills can boost your party’s speed and push their action bars forward, letting your team act more frequently. This not only increases your overall damage output, it also lets you fully shred and break an enemy’s toughness before they can attack, making fights run much more smoothly.

Learn These Terms To Pick Up The Game Faster

Honkai Star Rail has plenty of other common player-used terms and slang, but DOT, toughness shred, and action push are the three core terms new players encounter most often, and the ones that are most likely to confuse new players. Once you understand these three concepts, you won’t be left confused when reading team building guides or discussing strategies with other players, and you’ll be able to get the hang of this hit game much faster.
