Light cones are the most straightforward way to increase a character’s overall combat power. For damage-focused characters, you should prioritize 5-star light cones that boost crit rate, crit damage, attack percentage, or elemental damage bonus. If you do not have a 5-star light cone available, you can use a 4-star option that offers high attack or easy-to-trigger passive effects as a strong temporary transitional choice.

Support and Preservation characters prioritize functional effects when choosing light cones. Supports can pick light cones that boost party-wide damage, increase energy regeneration, or add valuable speed bonuses. Preservation characters should prioritize options that boost max HP, defense, damage reduction, or taunt effects, to keep themselves alive and protect their teammates effectively.

Weighing 5-Star Versus 4-Star Light Cones

5-star light cones almost always have higher base stats and stronger passive effects, making them the endgame goal for most characters. However, when you are early in the game and low on resources, some 4-star light cones have passives that fit specific characters perfectly, and can even outperform 5-star options in certain scenarios. That means you do not need to blindly chase 5-star light cones—you should always choose based on your character’s role and your team’s overall needs.

Relic Builds: Craft Perfect Stats and Set Bonuses

The relic system is the deepest and most time-consuming part of character building in Honkai Star Rail. Each character can equip four relics, one for each slot: Head, Hands, Body, and Feet. Head and Hands have fixed main stats (HP for Head, Attack for Hands), so choosing them is fairly simple. Picking the right main stats for Body and Feet, however, is absolutely critical to your character’s performance.

For Body slots, most players prioritize attack percentage, crit rate, or crit damage, depending on which stat your character is currently missing the most. For Feet, common options are speed or attack percentage—speed can make a massive difference for characters that rely on specific turn order or need higher break efficiency. Always base your final choice on your character’s kit and how they fit into your overall team composition.

Choosing Between Full Set Bonuses and Mixed 2-Piece Setups

Full relic set bonuses offer powerful percentage stat boosts, and are the core of any solid character build. Most damage dealers run two copies of the same set to unlock the 4-piece set bonus. That said, if you are new to the game or stuck without the right relic drops for your ideal full set, you can go for a “2+2” mixed setup: two pieces from two different sets that both offer useful bonuses for your character. This lets you activate multiple helpful set effects much more flexibly while you farm for better, endgame pieces.

Common 2+2 combinations include 2-piece attack set + 2-piece speed set, or two different damage-boosting sets that match your character’s element. This is a great transitional strategy that effectively increases your combat power when you are working with limited resources.

Trace Priority: Maximize Your Skill Value

Traces are the foundation of a character’s kit, split into Basic Attack, Skill, Ultimate, and Talent. Upgrading traces requires a huge amount of materials, so you need to allocate your resources carefully. As a general rule, the priority order for damage dealers is: Ultimate > Skill > Talent > Basic Attack. Ultimates are almost always the core of a character’s burst damage, while Skills are their main consistent source of damage or utility.

The priority order is different for Support and Preservation characters. Supports will usually prioritize their Ultimate (their big team buff or heal) and their Skill (their main on-demand utility). For Preservation characters, you should max out their core abilities first—like taunt or shield generation—to guarantee your whole team stays alive through tough fights.

When Should You Upgrade Basic Attack?

Basic Attack is almost always the lowest priority trace to upgrade. Unless your character has a special mechanic tied to their basic attack (for example, some Hunt characters regenerate extra energy with their basic attack, or Nihility characters have a high chance to apply debuffs with their basic attack), you can leave Basic Attack unupgraded when you are low on resources, and focus all your materials on your character’s core skills instead.

Overall Building Strategy and Resource Planning

Building a strong character requires balancing investments into light cones, relics, and traces. A solid, reliable strategy is to first get your light cone and traces to a usable baseline (for example, match your light cone level to your character level, and upgrade key traces to level 7-8), then dump the bulk of your resources into farming and optimizing relics. This works because relics have the most randomization, and take far longer to perfect than any other part of character building.

Setting clear, incremental goals is very important. For example, first focus on getting your character strong enough to clear main story content, then gradually work on gearing them up to challenge high-difficulty endgame content like the Forgotten Hall. Plan your Trailblaze Power usage carefully, and avoid dumping all your resources into a single character all at once—this will leave the rest of your team underleveled and stall your overall account progress.

Adjusting Priorities For Different Character Roles

While the general priority orders we covered above work for most characters, you should always adjust them based on your specific character’s role. For example, for speed-based supports that rely on frequent turns, speed main stat relics and trace upgrades get a huge priority boost. For counter-based Preservation characters, investing into HP and defense will give you better results than stacking pure attack.
