If you’ve ever played Honkai: Star Rail, you’ve almost certainly run into this incredibly frustrating situation: your party has a high-health, high-defense tank, plus a main DPS that stays on the field dealing steady damage. But for some reason, monsters ignore your frontline completely and focus all their fire on your support character Tingyun. After a party wipe, you’re left scratching your head: why does Tingyun pull so much aggro? This all comes down to the game’s hidden aggro (also called taunt value) mechanic, and today we’re breaking it all down to help you understand how monsters choose their attack targets.
What Is Aggro (Taunt Value)?
Aggro, also commonly referred to by players as threat or hate, is a hidden mechanic found in most turn-based RPGs and online games. Game AI uses the cumulative aggro value on each character to decide which target to attack first.
Most games have pretty intuitive aggro rules: dealing more damage to enemies, or actively using taunt abilities, builds up more aggro and makes monsters prioritize you. However, Honkai: Star Rail’s aggro system has an extra base layer: different characters naturally have different base aggro values, and that’s the core reason Tingyun gets targeted so often.
Why Do Monsters Always Target Tingyun? Core Reasons Revealed
Tingyun has a naturally high base aggro value
Based on data mined by players and hundreds of in-game tests, we know that characters from different Paths in Honkai: Star Rail have naturally different base aggro settings. Preservation Path (tank) characters have the highest base aggro, which fits their role of drawing enemy fire. Damage-dealing Paths have medium base aggro, and most support characters have low base aggro. But as a Harmony Path damage-boosting support, Tingyun’s base aggro is almost as high as most main damage dealers, making her naturally more likely to draw monster aggro than any other support.
Tingyun’s skill mechanics constantly build extra aggro
On top of her already high natural base aggro, Tingyun’s kit causes her to constantly build more aggro over the course of a fight. To charge up her ultimate ability, Tingyun will often use basic attacks and her skill on enemies right after entering battle. Even if her damage is low, every attack builds aggro proportional to the damage it deals. Add that to her passive that does continuous lightning damage over time, and every tick of damage adds even more aggro. Over time, her total aggro ends up higher than your party’s main DPS, so she naturally becomes the monster’s top target.
Common team compositions make the aggro problem worse
Most players pair Tingyun with burst damage main DPS characters. These types of damage dealers usually enter a cooldown cycle after their initial big burst, and they build aggro much slower than Tingyun, who is attacking constantly. Once Tingyun’s aggro pulls ahead of the main DPS, monsters will switch focus and take out her squishy frame quickly.
How To Stop Tingyun From Getting One-Shot Early: Practical Adjustment Tips
Once you understand how the aggro mechanic works, you can drastically cut the risk of Tingyun getting focused down with just a few small adjustments. First, if you have a Preservation character in your party, make sure to use their taunt ability to forcefully pull aggro away from low-health Tingyun. Second, adjust your damage rotation to keep your main DPS dealing steady consistent damage, so Tingyun doesn’t end up attacking too much and building excess aggro. Finally, if you don’t have a good tank in your team, you can use Relics to stack extra health and defense on Tingyun. That way, even if she gets targeted, she won’t get one-shot immediately, and she can keep boosting your team’s damage without dragging your whole party down.
Aggro is a cleverly designed hidden mechanic in Honkai: Star Rail. Most new players just assume Tingyun getting targeted is bad luck at first, but once you understand the logic behind it, you can fix the issue with small team adjustments and let Tingyun reach her full damage-boosting potential.
