Honkai Star Rail Trailblazer 3-Form Switch Guide & Ratings

As the free core character given to all players in Honkai: Star Rail, the Trailblazer is a one-of-a-kind unit that can freely switch between different elements and role types. As you progress through the main story campaign, the Trailblazer will eventually unlock three fully distinct elemental forms: Physical, Fire, and Imaginary. Many new players are unsure how to switch between forms, and want to know each form’s overall strength and ideal use cases. This guide will fully break down how to unlock and switch forms, as well as rate each option.

How to Unlock and Switch Trailblazer’s Three Elemental Forms

All three forms are unlocked sequentially as you progress through the main story, and the entire unlocking and switching process is very simple. No extra material farming is required to unlock any form:

1. Unlock Requirements: Physical Trailblazer becomes available immediately after completing the game’s prologue; Fire Trailblazer unlocks automatically after finishing the entire Belobog main story arc; you will gain access to Imaginary Trailblazer after completing the main story mission “A Thousand-Foot Tree Hides the Many-Storied Pavilion” on the Xianzhou Luofu.

2. Switching Method: Open the character menu, select the Trailblazer, then click the element button next to the character portrait, and you can immediately switch between any unlocked form. Switching is completely free, and level and Ascension progress is shared across all three forms. Only Traces need to be leveled independently, so switching costs almost nothing.

Role Overview and Rating for Each Elemental Form

Physical Element Trailblazer

Physical Trailblazer is a Destruction path damage dealer, focused on single-target damage and Physical toughness break. Their Ultimate deals massive burst damage to a single enemy target.

Overall, Physical Trailblazer is an excellent early-game carry for new players. When you haven’t pulled a 5-star damage dealer yet, or your team lacks a unit capable of breaking Physical toughness, it fits perfectly into the damage role. In the late game, Physical Trailblazer is mostly used as a niche counter pick for enemies with Physical weakness, so it is less versatile than the other two forms. It still performs very well when you need it, however.

Fire Element Trailblazer (Fire MC)

Fire Trailblazer is a Preservation path tank, capable of not only giving your entire party a strong durable shield, but also actively taunting enemies to draw their attacks, drastically reducing your team’s overall survival pressure.

Fire MC is widely recognized as a T0-tier free-to-play powerhouse. Not only is it completely free to obtain and easy to build, its overall survival ability can even outperform many 5-star Preservation characters. It delivers consistently solid performance whether you are clearing early-game content or tackling late-game high-difficulty challenges like Memory of Chaos. All players should prioritize fully leveling this form.

Imaginary Element Trailblazer (Imaginary MC)

Imaginary Trailblazer is a Harmony path support. It can not only give your entire team a massive attack buff, but also group scattered enemies and assist with toughness breaking, leading to very noticeable damage boosts for raw damage teams and Imaginary-focused composition alike.

In the current version of the game, Imaginary MC is a strong, highly versatile support. It has a low unlock barrier, delivers excellent damage buffs, and can fit into almost any damage-focused team as a support. It even holds up well compared to many 5-star support options, so you should definitely prioritize building it once you unlock it.

Form Switching Usage Recommendations

Since switching the Trailblazer’s form is completely free with no extra costs, we recommend that players switch flexibly before entering a new stage based on your team’s current gaps and enemy weaknesses:

If your team is missing a damage dealer and you are facing enemies weak to Physical, swap to Physical form; if your team has high survival pressure and lacks a shield tank, swap to Fire form; if your team needs extra damage buffs or crowd control via grouping, swap to Imaginary form.

Using the Trailblazer’s form switching mechanic flexibly lets you handle most in-game scenarios, and you do not need to invest resources into multiple separate characters, which saves a ton of crafting materials.

To summarize, each of the Trailblazer’s three elemental forms has a completely unique role. By making good use of the free switching mechanic, you can make this free main character perform just as well as many 5-star units, making it a core character well worth your investment.
